A custom tailored suit is a symbol of professionalism and success. The precise stitching and measurements allow the fabric to rest on the body in a way that is not possible with a ready-made design taken directly off the rack. One advantage in getting fitted for a custom tailored suit is that there are many distinctive, historical and unusual options available that will help to personalize how the jacket is worn and used on a daily basis. Some of these options only appear on suits that have been customized.

Ticket Pocket

A ticket pocket was once a standard feature on most suit coats. The usefulness of the pocket declined over time, however, and it is now found almost exclusively on custom tailored suits. A ticket pocket is a small fold that is located above one of the side pockets of the coat in the same location as the main pocket. The presence of a ticket pocket is an indication of the quality of the garment. It does also serve as a functional place to hold something small, such as a ticket stub or key.

Vents

One option that can be controlled on a custom tailored suit is the style and placement of the vents. Vents are the flaps that are located along the bottom back side of the jacket. Most ready-made suits have a single vent that appears as a slit in the center. There are also double-vented designs where two slits appear, leaving a solid flap in the back. Some people prefer a coat that has no vent in the back. The presence and style of the vents will help to determine exactly how the coat hangs off of the body and the shape of the jacket when buttoned.

Buttons On Sleeves

Even a large majority of custom tailored suits do not have functional buttons on the sleeves. The wearer is able to specify this option. Sleeves with functional buttons allow the wearer to unfasten each sleeve so that the hands can be washed or to protect the fabric while eating. This is a distinctive feature that is highly prized in some designs.

Lapels

The style of the lapels on a custom tailored suit help to determine the overall appearance of the coat. Custom options allow the wearer to specific whether the lapels should be notched, peaked or in the shawl fashion. The tailor will also be able to adjust the width of the lapels as well as the depth and height of the notches and peaks. Distinctive customizations of the lapels are another sign of a well-tailored suit that cannot be duplicated with a ready-made garment.
